2013 Women's Retreat Weekend "Peace by Piece" - UPDATED info

FYI - please read the important update about our 2014 Retreat Weekend at the bottom of this post!

***************

The time has come! I can put it off no longer!
This report needs to be written! ! !
Why has it taken me so long to do this, you ask?
Simple!
Needed some time away from the computer or at least some time away from actually using my brain for serious work. :-) But I think I'm ready now.

So here goes! ! ! !

Our retreat weekend was amazing!
Guess I could stop right here and go bake some "Pfeffernuesse" (Peppernuts - Christmas cookies)  but I know that you want to know a bit more, right? :-)

Amy Dueckman - Canadian Mennonite BC Correspondent did a great job with her report in the November 11, 2013 Issue. (Volume 17, Number 22, Page 21-22) so I will do more photo report!

I must warn you though, I did take a lot of pictures and can't possible post them all but here are the ones that will give you a good glimpse into our weekend.
***************
For me the weekend started on Thursday afternoon when I went to the airport to pick up Liz Koop, Mennonite Women Canada President. We were all so thrilled that she would be spending the weekend with us and get to know our BC women a bit better.

It was a wonderfully clear and sunny afternoon and Liz was able to see Mount Baker at its best on our way to Camp Squeah to unload my packed car and then turn around and go back to Hope and enjoy a nice dinner at  Joe's Restaurant & Lounge.

After a most delicious dinner we went back to Camp and started our prep work for the weekend.

Preparing all the
goody bags for our ladies.
Cheryl Dyck & Liz  Koop

On Friday morning we had time to enjoy nature and the nice sunshine due to a school group still being onsite, but in the afternoon we had to scramble to get everything ready.

Our theme and resource was Mennonite Women Canada 2012 Bible Study Guide "Let Justice Roll Down" by Rebecca Seiling who was also our guest speaker for the weekend.

As our decor we tried to show a river on the stage symbolizing water flowing and a white dove on each table symbolizing peace.

House of James book store was set up and the information table for Mennonite Women Canada and MCBC Women's Ministry.

Then, when the women started to arrive so did the Silent Auction items and 2 of our Committee members were busy accepting the items and organizing them. The Silent Auction is held in order to raise monies for our Retreat Bursary Fund that assists women to take part in this event.
We received over 100 items for the Silent Auction!
We also set up the table with all our pretty baskets, 5 in total! This is something we tried for the first time last year and it was a huge success and a lot of fun and the women asked to have it again this year.  The retreat participants are encouraged to buy tickets that are then entered in to  a container of their choice, (1 for each basket) and are later raffled off. These funds go to Mennonite Women Canada's Spiritual Growth Assistance Fund that assists with costs of academic and applied study. (Applicants will be considered for funding study at the Master’s level in church related ministries (such as seminary, theology, peace and conflict resolution). All members of a congregation belonging to Mennonite Church Canada are eligible to apply.)

Later, after our evening snack, we started our weekend craft, a small "Faux Quilt" of a Peace Dove to go with our weekend theme. This activity was planned by our committee member Cheryl Dyck.

Hard at work on your left!
This was an optional activity.
23 women had signed up for it.
The front was the same for everyone but the back was a fabric of their choice that they each brought from home.

On Saturday we started of with a mini breakfast and then went straight to our first session with Rebecca - "Peace with God: Manna in the Wilderness" - she spoke of God's daily provision, the assurance that people are fed today and will be fed tomorrow. "How do you collect manna every day, the evidence God is with you and that God is providing?" she asked and concluded  her talk by having each woman come forward and partake on bread dipped in Ontario maple syrup, it was a manner of Communion. (Parts of this paragraph have been paraphrase from Amy Dueckman's CM interview.)
Dipping her bread is Lydia Bergen
& waiting in line is Helen Dyck.
This picture is a bit unclear due to
the brightness of our beautiful &
 sunny background! :-)

Lining up to receive the
bread & syrup!

Spending some quality time with our Worship Team. We love these women and appreciate the time they spend in choosing all the appropriate and fitting songs.
Our Worship Team Members are:
l-r: Carla Hordyk,  Cheryl Heinrichs,
Dorothy Friesen & Elly Federau.
Enjoying our singing time!

afternoon with some friends.

Right: Former BC Women in Mission Presidents -
Veronica Thiessen & Marie Rehsler.

Cousins reconnecting while working on a puzzle!
In the pink is Liz Koop; blue is Mary Goertzen and yellow is Marian Martens.

In our afternoon session "Peace with Others: Journeying Together" we heard Rebecca telling us of her own rewarding experiences with people from other cultures and countries. Offering hospitality means people can offer comfort, forgiveness and the gift of presence to others. This session was followed by some more free time for hiking, napping or...

...something for the more active women in the group, like 45 minutes of "Rockercize 101" in the Edelweiss Hall with Gloria Laurence. Let me tell you.... this bunch had some fun! :-)

....and "Yoga 101" with Laura Loewen in the Main Lodge 2nd floor was also a much appreciated workshop!

After all the fun and exercise there was still some time to relax and get pretty for our annual group photo.
Getting organized takes some skill!

The weekend food was tasty and beautifully displayed. We love that we can work with the Squeah kitchen to come up with fun dishes and desserts such as our "Pigs in Mud" cake!

The ladies absolutely loved this chocolate cake!

Once dinner was done all the baskets were raffled off, the Silent
Auction items were handed out to the winning bidders and then it was time to have our puzzle competition. This was a truly interactive competition because each woman received a bag of puzzle pieces in many different sizes belonging to about a dozen different puzzles. They had to scoot from table to table trying to make their pieces fit.

It was hilarious to observe how intent this activity became! :-)

This little ducky went home to live
with Chef Tony!
:-)
He was the winning bidder!

When peace and quiet was once again restored,
small groups settled down to some table games
and others went to finish their weekend craft. :-)

Felt the need to post two of our group photos because one has the building in the background but the other second one is a better close up of the ladies.

2013 Group Photo - 81 women!
And to finish this pictorial report --- a group shot of our Retreat Planning Committee with our special guests from Ontario. Thank you so very much for accepting our invitation to come and spend a weekend with our BC Women.
Left - Right:
Gloria Laurence, Rita Siebert, Cheryl Dyck,
Rebecca Seiling  - our guest speaker,
Liz Koop - MW Canada Pres. and me, Waltrude Gortzen
These last 3 pictures are the only pictures in this post that I didn't take myself
but they were taken with my camera!

The weekend ended with the third session on Sunday morning "Peace with Myself: The Road to Personal Peace" - Rebecca said "I like to think of my life as a puzzle (where) the pieces are fitting together" and asked the group "What is the next piece of your puzzle? in what area of life is God calling you?" She concluded by distributing a piece of a jigsaw puzzle to each woman, asking us to write a word or phrase on it by which to live by to the coming year.

It was a wonderful weekend and we all went home having been blessed by what we heard from Rebecca, having enjoyed each others company and looking forward to our next retreat!
Lake of the Woods - a quick stop om my way home to just sit for a moment and reflect
on God's bountiful blessings we had just experienced and a few quick pictures!

We are thankful for the speaker that was willing to come all the way from Waterloo, ON.
We are thankful for the generosity of people that made it possible for her to come.
We are thankful for every one of you who is planning to attend and participate.
We are thankful that Liz Koop - MW Canada President will be spending the weekend with us.
We are thankful for the beautiful facilities that we can enjoy for a whole weekend.
We are thankful for the wonderful Worship Team that will be leading us again this year.
We are thankful for the committee that plans the best possible retreat experience for all of us!
We are thankful for the Camp Staff that will be looking after all our needs.

In Everything Give Thanks.
1 Thessalonians 5:18
***********************

With the retreat weekend just being a few days away we are really getting quite excited about it.
The Planning Committee has had tons of fun putting together and informative and fun weekend for all of us.

Our hope is to provide a weekend where we can praise and worship God together, learn something new, have fun, make new friends and reconnect with old friends and enjoy our beautiful surroundings,

Would also like to give you a little taste of what our speaker Rebecca Seiling will be presenting in her sessions during her time with us.
We are so looking forward to what God has in store for us next weekend!

***********************
Session 1 --- Peace with God: Manna in the Wilderness

How do we find peace with God? The story of the wandering Israelites finding manna each morning challenges us to believe in a God of provision and more-than-enough. We’ll touch on spiritual practices and transformation, daily bread and butterflies.

Session 2 --- Peace with Others: Journeying Together

We know that we can’t walk alone; we need each other. What is our responsibility to others? How can we act out of a transformed life together? Through stories, we’ll hear about hospitality, forgiveness, and doing the unusual.

Session 3 --- Peace with Myself: The Road to Personal Peace

Sometimes the hardest road to peace is taming the monsters in our own heads. How are we accepting ourselves, and seeing our lives through God’s eyes? What places in our lives need healing? What is God’s role in helping us be at peace with ourselves?

It not too late for you to register! ! !
Online registration is still open! ! !
Just click HERE or contact us by leaving a comment here and we will get back to you ASAP!
See you all next weekend!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Inspirational Day - 2013

Will start this report with our beautiful poster - - -
prepared by Dan Loewen - MCBC's Communications person.

And the picture on the right is a visual of our Inspirational Day Theme.
Beloved Before Time!
Psalm 139
A Heart for Love and an Hourglass for Time

We started on Friday afternoon with all the set-up and decorating.
Each woman received the program booklet, the fall retreat registration,
Mennonite Women Canada "Pennies and Prayer Legacy Fund" brochure (purple on the right)
and a brochure for the ministry that our hosting church decided to support with
their quarter of the events offering - "Youth Unlimited".

On the left - tables are ready and waiting for the women.
On the right - the table that is waiting for the women to have some fun!

On the left: Ten Thousand Villages ready for the ladies.
On the right: information table for Mennonite Women Canada and
MCBC Women's Ministry.

After all the tables had a pretty floral centerpiece, these pretty roses
were still available and  promptly became a raffle item!

In each of the pretty bags was one
of the scarves you see here.
We chose the pink & white, white & gold and
the white & black.
They were donated by one of our ladies
who wishes to stay anonymous!
We thank you very much!
No event is complete
without a few door prizes.
THEN.... just before 7:00 pm ....
...once all the setup was done...
I headed over to House of James for the book-launch of
Mennonite Girls Can Cook newest book "Celebrations"
I had previously arranged to pick up two autographed copies of the book,
1 for the Inspirational Day and 1 for the Fall Women's Retreat.
The books were ready and waiting for me when I got there and I was totally surprised when
I found out that MennoMedia had decided to donate the two copies to MCBC Women's Ministry.
Thank you, so much!

On stage are the folks from MennoMedia.
Sitting at the tables are the guests of honour - MGCC.
In the foreground, in the checkered shirt is
the owner of House of James - Lando Klassen.

Saturday morning arrived, bright and sunny, warm and gorgeous!

I got to the church a few minutes after 8:00 am to take care of a few last minute details
and when I walked past the kitchen, this is what I saw.

On the left: Elli Friesen and Hilda Krause baking fresh buns to go with our lunch!
The muffins were already baking in the ovens and the place was smelling wonderful.
On the right: Rudi Ketler and his daughter prepping our lunch menu.
Thank you so much for the time you gave to feed all of us!

And then... the cakes started to arrive!
One prettier that the other!
10 in total!

This was going to be fun!
A good old fashioned "Cake Walk"!

Tickets - $5.00 each that could be used either for the Cake Walk or
you could enter the ticket in the Book Raffle.
You could buy as many tickets as you wanted to
but each ticket could only be used once.
Money from the ticket sales was designated for
Women's Ministry operating budget.
Thank you so much to the 8 ladies that donated the fabulous cakes and
to all the women that bought tickets!
Fun was had and a few lucky ladies got to take home these yummy cakes!

Picture received from Bettina Gonzales.
Are they not gorgeous?
And so many varieties - - -
chocolate, vanilla, fruit filled, Napoleon cake and more!
We have already had requests to do this again next year!
Not to mention that this helps our budget, tremendously!
We are ever so grateful!

Picture received from Bettina Gonzales.
Perusing all the options!
And the program starts....

Welcoming all the ladies to our event is Rita Siebert -
Women's Ministry Committee Member from
She read a portion Psalm 139 - our theme for the day.
Below is our wonderful Women's Ministry Worship Team
From left to right:
Carla Hordyk, Cheryl Heinrichs, Dorothy Friesen and Elly Federau
Taking care of a bit of Women's Ministry business!
Having some fun with the "Cake Walk" during our free time at lunch.

And these were the two books that the women could use their tickets for.
Mennonite Girls Can Cook "Celebrations"
won by Margaret Schroeder from Bethel Mennonite Church
and April Yamasaki's "Sacred Pauses"
won by Dale Barnett from Northview Community Church

Lunch time!

Picture received from Bettina Gonzales.
The main course was a typical Paraguayan dish called "Guisso",
A rice dish with either beef or chicken meat in it.
We had both options available to us.
We also had Caesar Salad and fresh baked buns.
followed by a nice piece of cheese cake.
Our bakers and cooks are on the right top corner of the picture above.

Lunch was followed by a floral demonstration by Dan Trayler owner of Homestead Nursery Land.

Once that was done we sat back and listened to our guest speaker Carole Smith-WheatonSee her suitcase on the floor? It was full of heavy baggage to share with us. Full of names and labels that people may have called us; words that we sometimes use to describe ourselves – words that either lift us up or leave a scar but then she proceeded to explain how blessed we all are to be fully and completely “BELOVED” by our Father – Psalm 139.

Thank you so much for accepting our invitation to be our speaker, Carole. You did a wonderful job of it!

The Worship Team led us in singing just the right song to go with our theme. Some of us had already learned it at our 2012 Fall Women Retreat Weekend. And since we used the retreat theme for the Inspirational Day, we knew that we needed to use the song and the visuals one more time.
10 women volunteered to hold up signs while we sang the song
"Remind Me Who I Am" by Jason Gray
you can listen to it HERE

Ohhh... and for bringing the most coins for Mennonite Women Canada's
"Pennies & Prayer Legacy Fund" - Mika Toews won the planter
that was assembled during the floral demo.
This was a Facebook challenge that we had put on our
to find out who pays attention! :-)
(Please go and like our page in order not to miss anything! )
Thank you, ladies!

And to finish our wonderful day, we were treated to a special snack provided
by our Hmong Sisters from the Western Hmong Mennonite Church in Maple Ridge!
Fresh spring-rolls! They were delicious and disappeared in no time flat!

Picture received from Bettina Gonzales.
This last picture is from our clean-up crew!
The men from Eben-Ezer Mennonite Church - our hosts!
We can't thank you enough for your kindness!

As you can see, it was a fun filled day!
We made new friends and met old ones again.
Together, we sang, we ate and we worshiped the Lord.
We were blessed and look forward to next year's
Inspirational Day when we will be celebrating our
75th Gathering on Saturday, May 3rd, 2014.
Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available!
